It's not easy being green

It's not easy being green has been a topic of discussion on my mind for a few weeks now.

Before we left for SnowShoe WV three weeks ago, I took it upon my self to make sure the house was clean and enjoyable for our house guest and for when I came home.

As I started cleaning my tiny house, I decided to dust, sweep, and even clean some nooks and cranny's I have not touched in a long time. As Roxie and I managed to make our way threw the house I started noticing the pile of trash I was leaving behind and the multiple cleaners I chose.

My Cleaning Journey:

Starting in the spare bed room, was and is always easy. I started with a paper towel and Pledge only one dresser in this room. After the dresser was completed a fast sweep of the carpet and DONE.

Totaling: One paper towel
Cleaning supplies: Pledge

Next room was our bed room: Pledge and paper towels were called for again. After the dirty clothes were picked up, clothes put away, and the bed was changed and made, I pulled the pledge and paper towels out again. Two night stands, one big dresser, and the foot and head of the bed were cleaned with two paper towels and the pledge. A fast sweep and done.

Totaling: Three paper towels
Cleaning supplies: Pledge

Not so bad right, one cleaning supply and three paper towels. Well here is were it gets sticky. The bath room. Three Clorox wipes, Clorox throw away toilet thing, two paper towels and a few squirts of Windex later I was moving on to the dinning and living room.

Dinning room consisted of two paper towels, Windex and Pledge

Living room Consisted of Windex and about ten paper towels.

Office consisted of: two Clorox wipes, and Windex multi-surface to clean the floor.

This so far has left us with a totaling of:
15 paper towels
5 Clorox Wipes
Clorox Throw away toilet thing

Cleaning supplies:
Pledge
Windex
Windex Multi-surface

Off to the last and final room for the day: The kitchen. At this time, I started to realize how grossly discussed I was to realize I have been using all this "stuff" in my house. So I payed close attention in the kitchen. Two paper towels and Windex Multi-Surface  for the counters, two new garbage bags, two Clorox wipes for the two garbage cans, one more Clorox Wipe for the table, Running water while washing dishes, and lastly Windex Multi-Surface for the floor.

This left me with a total of:
17 paper towels
8 Clorox Wipes
Clorox Throw away toilet thing

Cleaning supplies:
Pledge
Windex
Windex Multi-surface
Running water

While all this was going on the washing machine with my Tide was running all day.

I am very saddened by this. When I lived on my own as a college student I made it a habit to live green, or at least try.  Once I moved back home and living by my self I thrived on not using Clorox wipes or only using recycled trash bags. And while doing that I started the frugal living, coupons.

Watch for part two tomorrow!

  2. It can be hard living green, I completely understand! I stopped using paper towels (except for draining bacon etc) about six months ago and use rags for everything now. It saves a lot of money! I also make my own cleaning sprays using vinegar. I will say thought that it takes a lot more time (making the solutions, laundering the rags etc) than using store-bought cleaners, so there is a trade off.

    1. There is a trade off however, knowing you are doing good for the environment and your family makes it worth it. The key most likely is to have a lot of rags LOL! Good luck with your green cleaning! Send me an email and share your green story I'd love to share it with my readers!
